Moving Tips from Mom |
- Pick up a kit from the Post Office
- Credit card changes can be completed on the reverse side of most monthly bills
- Magazines – use the toll-free number or on-line services – found in the small print at the front of most issues
- Don’t forget banks, insurance companies, church, or grandparents who supply valuable mail.
|
- Grocery stores or liquor stores are a good source of boxes – as long as they have a top which can be sealed
- If you live in an area where many people move, look for moving boxes at the curb on garbage day
- "dollar stores" are a great source of sealing tape or bubble wrap for your most delicate items
- Before you begin packing return items to their proper location - so socks, silverware, and tennis rackets do not get packed together
- Label each box with both its room and contents - i.e., kitchen/pots and pans or bedroom/contents of bureau
- Don't move inexpensive furniture with its contents inside - but pillows or stuffed animals can be moved in dresser drawers
- Pack a box with essentials such as toilet paper, plate/bowl/spoon, medicines, towel, flashlight, screw driver, etc. and label: Open First
- If you have furniture with assembly hardware (beds, bookcases, computer desks, etc.) enclose each set of hardware in a plastic bag. Transport the hardware separately from your boxes - in a purse, backpack, or briefcase - to facilitate reassembly.
- Protect pictures, posters, mirrors, or other large breakable items with a thick layer of sheets, blankets, or towels, and tape securely
|
- Put the largest and heaviest items on the bottom
- Wrap cushioning material (paper, cloth, towel, bubble wrap, paper towel) around each piece
- If possible, invest in clean white packing paper available at U-Haul or moving stores. Newspaper ink makes a dirty mess and should be the packing of last resort.
- Pack like items together - think about unpacking as you pack
- Save packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and plastic bags to fill odd spaces in boxes so breakable items do not shift during transport.
- The handle is the most vulnerable part of a cup, mug, or pitcher. Use extra wrapping material on the most breakable areas
- Pack books in smaller boxes. If you have only big boxes, pack a few books at the bottom of several boxes.
- Fill containers from the kitchen or office with small items from the same area
- Small furniture (a foot stool, for example) is best moved in a box
- To move clothing, the first choice is a cardboard wardrobe box from a moving company. A low-tech alternative is to stack clothing on a clean sheet or blanket, and wrap like a giant Christmas package. Move this on the top of your piles of boxes.
- When loading your moving vehicle, place the heaviest items forward. Turn chairs upside down on top of similar chairs to make a more manageable shape. Protect furniture with quilted moving pads (available for rent at U-Haul, etc.) or old blankets or quilts (not the antique kind).
